403 Forbidden You don’t have permission to access / on this server. -Linux Server and Apache

I have installed Apache in root user successfully. I have also created separate instance for my website.

If I try to browse any file including the root site, I get the following error message:

ERROR

403 Forbidden                                                                                                                                                     You don’t have permission to access / on this server.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

How to solve ?

I looked for the permission of the http folders, orginally it had only read permission.

I changed the permission for the http folder by using the following command.

# chmod -R 777 /var/www/html/

Now i could able to access all pages including root site.

Hope this may help you.

Thanks                                                                                                                                                            Bharath

Is it possible to hack into this webpage?

    http://www.math.ubc.ca/~tomm/teaching/340winter2011/mid_feb_2011_sol.pdf

cuz whenever i try to open the link, it says “Forbidden You don’t have permission to access /~tomm/teaching/340winter2011/mid_feb_2011_sol.pdf on this server.”

I would really appreciate if you would get the website to work. Thanks!
